In modern times many changes in social conditions have affected the institution of the family. The family is no longer the
unit of production. Production is undertaken by industrial and commercial institutions. In the earlier times children were regarded as economic assets since they worked with adults and started to earn very early. Today even children from poor
families spend more time in schools run by the various State Governments.
Women today, too have a different role to play and they are no longer confined to the house alone. Men and women equally share and carry the burden of the house-hold responsibilities. The close circle of kins related to the family by blood or matrimonial alliance is n
ot as close as it used to be. This is so because the members of a family no longer follow one trade or profession together and nor do they live in close proximity.
Questions:
(a) What has brought about the change in the institution of a family today?
(b) Why is the family no longer a unit of production ? 2
(c) Why are children no longer regarded as economic assets ?
(d) Find one word in the passage which means ‘advantage’?
Answers :
(a) The change has been brought about by a change in the social condition.
(b) This is so because production is now carried on by industrial and commercial institutions.
(c) Children are no longer regarded as economic assets because even children from poor families go to school and are unable to add to the family income.
(d) The word ‘assets’ means same as ‘advantage’.

2. Read the following passage and answer the question that follow:
There are four main areas of the world which are rich in oildeposits. The first area is that of the Middle East. It includes the regions near the Caspian Sea, the Black Sea, the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. The second is the area between North and the South America. The third lies between Asia and Aus- tralia. It includes the islands of Sumatra, Borneo and Java. The fourth area is the part near the North pole.
When all the present oil fields are used up, it is possible that this cold region may become the scene of oil activity. Yet the difficulties will be great. The costs may be so high that no company will under- take the work. Perhaps atomic power shall one day take the place of oil, and then we shall not have to hunt for new oil fields. The oil found in natural state is called crude oil. It is treated in refineries.
The most common form of treatment is heating. When crude oil is heated, the first vapours to rise are cooled and become the finest petrol. Gas that comes off the oil later is condensed into paraffin. It is used as a fuel in heaters and lamps.

Gulf, the area between North and South America and the area between Asia and Australia and the North Pole.

To

6 January 2022
Progress Report of Ganga (Cleaning Mission) A government-commissioned independent study of 97 towns along the Ganga shows that 39% of these towns in five States are in need of overall improvement in cleanliness, solid waste management and a change in how nullahs (drains) are handled.
The study was conducted over six weeks in November- December 2018. Only 92 towns were considered for the study as data could not be obtained for five towns. The study assigns three grades to Ganga towns: Grade A: Good cleanliness and solid waste management services in and around the ghats area. Most nullahs were connected to STP or had garbage screens. Grade B: Partial cleanliness around the ghats.
Needs improvement in solid waste management services. Grade C: Needs overall improvement in cleanliness, solid waste management services and infrastructure set up of nullahs. Over half the towns in Bihar and West Bengal where the Ganga flows were given the C grade, which means they require overall improvement. It is common for nullahs to drain into the Ganga across towns in all the States. In Bihar, the towns had dumpsites along the river as well. An analysis of funds allocated for the Ganga-cleaning mission shows that in 2017-18, only half the budgeted amount
was released/spent.

Dear friend Salim,
I hope you are well by the grace of the Almighty. I am well too. Please convey my regards to your parents. It’s been long since I received your last letter. So I have thought of writing this letter. I am writing this letter to share with you how I spend my daily life. My daily lifestyle is very simple.
But it is balanced, in my view. I get up very early in the morning and sip some tea. Then I go out for morning walk. After returning, I go out for tuition in Maths. When I get home, I sit down for some studies until 8:30 am. Then I take bath and go for school. After the\ school is over, I take lunch and go out for playing. At about 6 pm I sit for studying and continue till 9 pm. Then I watch TV
and have meal. After that I study a little more and go to bed. This is my daily life. I hope you shall share yours too.

10. You are Sapna of class-X. Write a speech in about 100 words on the topic “The role of library in Schools”.
Ans. Good morning everyone,
Respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends, I Sapna, Head Girl, am standing before you to share my views on the topic ‘The role of library in school.’ A school library is a place that plays an important role in students’ life. Library helps in motivating students, encouraging them and acts as fulfilment of thirst for knowledge. The school library exhibits positive impact on the academic achievement of the student, as it helps in developing the mind
of the students.
Learning these days is not limited to classroom lectures and training. Library occupies a significant place in school and in book lovers’ lives. It houses books suited to the interests and aptitude of individuals of different age groups. Not only that, it also includes magazines, periodicals, newspapers. With its calm and peaceful atmosphere it is a special comfort zone to the students who go there to acquire knowledge, sharpen their minds or lose themselves in the fictional worlds of the stories.
Library is the best place to read without disturbance. I love reading and writing so visiting the library for me is really very exciting. I can spend my entire day in the library.
Thank you.
