2. Read the following passage and answer the question that follow:
Astronomers tell us that long-long ago the earth and all the planets were part of the Sun. The Sun was then, as it is now,
a mass of flaming matter, terribly hot. Somehow little bits of the Sun got loose and they shot out into the air.

But they could not wholly get rid of their father, the Sun. It was as if a rope was tied to them and they kept whirling round the Sun. This strange force, which is here compared to a rope, is called gravity. It is something which attracts little things to greater ones. In this way our earth shot out from the Sun.

To begin with, it must have been very hot, with terribly hot gases and air around it. But as it was very much smaller than the Sun, it started to cool. The Sun also is getting less hot but it will take millions of years to cool down. The earth took much less time to cool. Of course, nothing could live on it—no man or animal or plant or tree then it was hot. Everything would have been burnt up then.

Lincoln once played a practical joke upon a rich client of his. This man wanted Lincoln to take a poor neighbour to court
for not paying back a small sum of two and a half dollars.

Anything that pleases you,
As long as you keep in sight

(i) Independence Day

The Independence Day reminds us of those patriots who fought and died or suffered to win freedom for us. India became
free on August 15, 1947. On this day our first Prime Minister Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru unfurled the National Flag at the Red Fort for the first time.

Henceforth it is celebrated all over India with\ great zeal. People hold meetings, fly the tricolour and sing the National Anthem. There is a great enthusiasm among them. In Delhi, the Capital of India, this day is celebrated with great pomp and show. The Prime Minister unfurls the National Flag.

A guard of honour is given by the police and army. A salute of 31 guns is fired. After the Prime Minister’s speech the function comes to an end with the recital of the national anthem Jana Gana Mana.

(ii) Health is Wealth

‘Health is wealth’ is a well-known saying. Without good health life is a burden. When we fall ill we are unhappy. We
cannot work or play. Germs cause illness. They are very small living things. They live on dirt and grow in darkness. They are found everywhere.

They get into our body by air, water, food or cuts in the skin and make us ill. Dirt and darkness are the enemies of good health. They breed germs. Sunlight and cleanliness destroy them. So we must keep our bodies clean to keep healthy. We should live in well-lighted houses and take exercises regularly. Bad habits like smoking and drinking must be avoided.

(iii) My Ambition in Life

Everybody has a certain ambition in his life. A life without an ambition is like a ship without a rudder. People have different ambitions in their lives. My aim in life is to become a lecturer. There are many reasons for adopting this profession. After passing my B.A., I well do my post graduation in English.

I will specialize in this subject. A teacher is a nation builder. He guides his students through his personality. It is a very noble profession even. He turns his students to become a useful citizen of a good country. He feels young in the company of his students. He always learns and accumulates knowledge. It is he who fills worth in his students. May God fulfil my dream to become a lecturer !

(iv) A Rainy Day

A rainy day in summer is a great blessing. Last year the summer in Delhi was unusually hot. Hot winds continually blew
from morning till evening. Nights, too were close and stuffy. Hopeful eyes fixed at the sky prayed to the gods to have pity.
The gods perhaps did listen and on the 18th of June, some clouds were seen gathering in the sky.

There was joy all around. It started pouring soon. The showers came as a great relief to the perspiring persons. Very soon there was knee-deep water everywhere. Old and young played and bathed in the rain. Mangoes were readily in demand. When the rain stopped, there  was a rainbow in the sky. Heat had gone. All enjoyed a sound sleep at night.

(v) My Motherland

India is my motherland. It is a country of lakes, gardens, springs and hills. She has many rivers which irrigate her vast
and fertile lands. Its civilization is as old as the history of the world. My country stands for peace and freedom.

It is really a beautiful and rich country. My country-men are the bravest in the world and the women here are kind-hearted but strong willed. I pray that no enemy may attack her border and no citizen of her be a victim of grief and pain. I am proud of my country.

9. You are Kumar. Write a letter to your younger brother, telling him about the importance of Yoga.

G Rainbow Colony,
M.G. Road,
Patna- 800006.
7th March, 2021.

   Dear brother,
Received your yesterday. I hope all is well with you and rest of the family. I am writing this letter to advise you about the importance of Yoga.
Yoga in daily life is a system of practice consisting of eight levels of development in the areas of physical, mental, social and spiritual health. When the body is physically healthy, the mind is clear, focused and stress is under control. This gives the space to connect with loved ones and maintain socially healthy relationships.

When you are healthy you are in touch with your inner self, with others and your surroundings on a much deeper level, which adds to your spiritual health. The word “Yoga” originates from Sanskrit and means “to join or to unite”.  Yoga exercises have a holistic effect and bring body, mind, consciousness and soul into balance.

The main goals of “Yoga in Daily Life” are Physical Health, Mental Health, Social Health, Spiritual Health, Self-Realization or realization of the Divine within us. These goals are attained by love and help for all living beings, respect for life, protection of nature and the environment, a peaceful state of mind, full vegetarian diet, pure thoughts and positive lifestyle, physical, mental and spiritual practices, tolerance for all nations, cultures and religions.

Yogic techniques are known to improve one’s overall performance. Pranayama is an important, yet little known part of Yoga. Until recently, this art and science of yogic breathing was almost completely unknown to the common man like many other ancient Indian arts.Pranayama techniques act to purify the nadis including these three main energy channels.

Healthy society at Dharavi Street is offering Yoga classes for all with special batches for students at reasonable fees. Hope you will join these classes and avail the benefits. Convey
my regards to all at home.
                                                                               Your loving brother,
                                                                               Mithlesh
